This forum has grown beyond its original "place for the lads to hang out", but I'm still having a "where should us lads go on holidays" thread. Anyone else can feel free to chip in with thoughts (or, let's face it, invite themselves. We probably won't argue too much).
Anyway, my idea #1: Ferry to France ('cos that was cool last year). Train to Munich. Camp in Munich - loads of time to enjoy the beer halls. Train somewhere with a beach. A few days there. Fly home.
Thoughts?
(I can't abide not being at some stage in the planning a holiday process. And for those who are wondering, yes that means no-one has enough money to go to Canada. Sorry P-Man).
A possible alternative involves a stop-off in London instead of a beach holiday part. Discuss.

I live in the States, anywhere in which I would assume is also outside your price range. I did spend time in Germany over the summer, though, which was good fun. I'd recommend Munich and Frankfurt especially, though, I'm sure you European boys already know more about both than I could ever hope to.

I vote for London. No travelling for me, thank you very much.
Or Edinburgh. I'd really like to see it. It's even got Ezio's (my sleazy Italian philosophy lecturer) stamp of approval! Which is something, if you know the guy.
Wouldn't mind a bit of the channel islands either (Guernsey, Jersey etc.).

Diarmuid's idea is fine by me, really. But yeah, I would love go to London. I mean, you could do that on the really, really cheap.

I am heading London wise this summer. It can be pretty cheap, and there's tons to do and places to go out...
Not to mention, flights cost about a tenner...

London kicks ass. We should all rent an apartment again! I stayed in an animal one in Camden last year. Well worth going back
Though I think i should mention that my Da is dead set on another mammoth family holiday this year... >.>

It'll be fun! You only need to spend a week or so in London! and you have three months off! Rent an apartment! Rent an apartment!
I did hear tell that Edinburgh is lovely too!

Also, weeva wants me to go to Birmingham for a folk festival with our other internet buddies. Duno about that either. Anyway, we need to get dates that I can work around, and that goes for my dad too. He's faffing around with Ideas but not much more.

Yeah, I don't think that I'm going to that festival either. If I do end up going to London though, she'll probably have to tag along. I have Alan Rickman's home address and he's not going to stalk himself.

Seriously?! Cool. Good luck with that. Have you been invited to the fest then? You should so go! I have a much better chance of parental blessing on that journey if I'm going with someone my Da has actually met...

Well... it's a folk festival...
... I'll see if my bank account will allow it, though. I mean, we don't actually have to LISTEN to the folk.

Firstly--- Aonghus your 19 for gods sake, do whatever you want. That goes for everything you said in this thread so far.
Second--- I'm not intending on leaving Ireland unless it's under 250€ all told, and I mean everything food, accom, travel, etc.
Lack of funds and aspirations to buy a car are the reason for this.(I know that word isnt spelt right)

Adaboy, Donncha. I wouldn't mind going on a mad one down to Wexford or something. Or doing the Wicklow Way again. That'd be cool.

Aye, I wouldn't mind doing the Wicklow Way again (opposite direction this time though). I'm finished exams on the 28th, any interest in doing it just after that? I think (hope) I'm gonna be starting work around four days later, so we could maybe squeeze it in then if anyone's up for it then.
And Donncha's spot on, as usual.

Id be up for an expedition of sorts indeed. Count me in always....so long as its on the cheap of course.
And btw, there will be plenty of cruising opportunities aboard Modeste, seeing as many of you put in a fair bit of work last year.

What kind of a name for a boat is that. "modeste"

|
|
Post by Tom on Mar 30, 2009 13:09:18 GMT
It's the name that came with the boat, as I understand it. And we all know how unlucky it is to rename a boat.
Anyway, what's wrong with being modest? I think some people could learn from Donncha's boat!

You know one day in school this girl had one of those baby name books and 'Modesty' was in it. How cruel, and yet hilarious.

It's better than something stupid like Chastity or Temperance though.

I think Punctuality as a girl's name is the best of the lot. Much worse even than Prudence.

It's better than something stupid like Chastity or Temperance though. No, it's not! I mean, imagine calling one child Helen, after Helen of Troy right? And then calling the other one Modesty?

Most countries have a law preventing awful names, after the increasing amount of people wanting to change them from stuff like: Sharmonica, Espe Do Wop Jones, asshole, ., Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan, Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen, 007, Hiltler and smelly dog. All of which were given as actual names!

007? You really should not be able to give a child a number for a name. ('I am not a number, I am a free born man!' anyone?)
You can name your child anything in Ireland, but then the state can take your children away from you if they don't dig it.

I like the prisoner reference. Anyone remember the Simpson's parody? "How could a bubble stop someone? " "Shut-up that's why!"

A couple in Sweden tried to name their child 'Stalmannen' (Superman) because he was born pointing his arm upwards, like Superman in flight.
They weren't allowed.

Yeah... A lot of 'normal' names can be unfair too though. Like those twins that got called Benson and Hedges. Or how I was very nearly named 'Lucy' after the bucket my mother was puking into while pregnant with me. >=U

Seriously? Wow, close call! O.o The worst I would have had to endure is being called oisín. Almost happened. Hooray for histpry-loving parents and their mythological names...
